My friend and i are starting up a band. she wants me to play saxophone. would that sound bad in a metal band?

You can't be certain until you try. If a friend asks you to play in a band regardless the instrument you play that is a true friend. I don't think its laughable, I think its a good thing. Jazz influenced metal does exist.
