Mother cat keeps laying on kittens?

I would try separating them again but this time try putting them in a different room. If she really is laying on them this should help. Since she is a stray the kittens may be sick, I would take them to a vet as soon as possible to help keep the remaining three alive. If you can not today, try the separation and go tomorrow. I am very sorry that they died.
