Getting my kitten to use the litter box?

I try to put him in the litter box to get him comfortable but the instant i put him in he jumped out like he was scared to death. I tried a little more subtly to put him in but he stood there for like 2 seconds then walked out. How can i get him to use his litter box quickly? I dont want any more surprises in my shoes.
